Teachers and anyone else in a public service profession should relate to this P.J. O'Rourke quote:
Because of their size, parents may be difficult to discipline properly.
Adults, like children, can feel entitled to priviliges and respect that they haven't earned. The problem is, adults demand to be treated as equals (or as superiors), making the disagreement that much more difficult to negotiate. Every teacher has a story about a parent who felt entitled and didn't deserve to be treated in that fashion. Every conscientious parent has had the experience of having a teacher point out the shortcomings of their child and felt it necessary to take responsibility for that situation. It's a twisted web we weave in human inter-personal relationships.
