When beginning my reverse commission process, I contacted an old friend from my Penn State Blue Band days who was directing a small volunteer brass band as part of the U.S. Navy. The result was this rather eccentric piece entitled The Melting Pot. It is a depiction of several national and folk themes from across the globe coming together in the crucible to become the alchemy that is the United States of America. The main theme and much of the piece's harmony is based off of the first four pitches of "Anchors Aweigh". See if you can identify all of the folk themes quoted in this piece.
This piece has not been picked up by a publisher but is available from the composer. I started working on a transcription for concert band, but found the project to be not too much fun - maybe later.
