In January of 2011, Music Professional Learning Network member Brian Wis of Teaching Music In The 21st Century took advantage of Facebook's new Groups features to create a new professional learning network for scholastic band directors entitled simply I'm a Band Director.

Any practicing scholastic band director, pre-service music educator, or retired band director can request membership. Since its inception over four months ago, the membership of I'm a Band Director has climbed to over 1800, and with good reason - the conversations and knowledge being shared in this Facebook group are quite easily worth paying for.

This group spawned several other spin-off Facebook music ed PLN's but none of the others has caught on with the passion and dynamic interaction of I'm a Band Director. If you teach instrumental music in a public school, private school, or community band program, I highly recommend you join the conversation. Brian Wis is the sole administrator, and I continue to admire his ability to engage the membership, curate useful online information, and keeping the tone of the group as professional and non-partisan as possible.
