The Chase Is On! Support Music Education Organizations In The Facebook Chase Community Giving

Chase Commmunity Giving

Voting in round two of the Chase Community Giving began today on Facebook. There are several music education organizations in the top 100 who received $25,000 in round one. Round two grants are worth $500,000! Each group has a "Big Idea" that they are using the money for.

Here are the organizations in the top 100 that you can vote for to support music education in America:

Music Educators National Conference has the Big Idea of simply "The study and making of music by all." MENC will use $150,000 to provide 100 grants of $1000 -$2500 to school music programs in underserved areas to help students achieve success through music. We will use $150,000 to develop resources and to provide training to help teachers build music programs with strong foundations and to help those whose programs are facing budget cuts. We will use $200,000 for a national web/social media campaign to encourage kids to study music and others to support school music programs – featuring stories of teachers and students in programs that have received grants- to show what is at risk and what stands to be gained.

Drum Corps International will invest its grant in several initiatives, engaging more young people in its current & future activities through their participation in and appreciation of this unique art form, while preserving the legacy of marching music in the US. SPOTLIGHT THE PRESENT: Through technology & live interaction, this grant will connect thousands of students & millions of their fans worldwide in exciting new ways. DEVELOP THE FUTURE: Expanding innovative extracurricular programming & developing experiential learning opportunities, we will better equip our corps to inspire & train new generations of educators & student leaders. PRESERVE THE PAST: As specialized marching music groups, drum & bugle corps have evolved well beyond their military origins. This grant helps create physical & digital archives of historical photos, recordings & memorabilia enabling scholarly research and historical preservation.

Santa Clara Vanguard drum and bugle corps' mission, and their Big Idea, is to “be the recognized leader in music and movement education for young people in Silicon Valley.” Through our two drum corps and our indoor winter guard and percussion ensembles, we offer world-class educational performance experiences to students from all over the U.S., the majority of whom are from California, where arts budgets have been slashed over the past three decades. Grant funding significantly aids the fulfillment of our strategic plan, allowing our organization to expand and meet the artistic needs of local youth by providing teachers, mentors, facilities and instruments, as well as opportunities to perform locally and nationally. We are committed to reaching students who lack access to these beneficial and life-enriching opportunities. By working in tandem with local school districts, we can achieve our Big Idea, reverse the trend of recent decades and make music and dance education to flourish again in Silicon Valley.

The Blue Devils drum and bugle corps organization uses music and the performing arts to connect youth through a common language crossing generational, social, and racial barriers. To continue our mission we are creating the program, One Music One World which will create life-changing experiences through international exchanges that leverage music to bridge cultural, economic and social divides to establish lifetime social engagement in youth. One Music One World will form worldwide partnerships to build long-term relationships that provide a positive impact on youth around the world. The first partnership will be with the Field Band Foundation of South Africa. Together, we will facilitate cultural, instructional and instrument exchange for youth, teachers and audiences and provide experiential learning on social justice. One Music One World will create lasting social change and world-savvy leaders through the joy and education of the performing arts.

Youth Education in the Arts states: "Music programs in our schools are in jeopardy. Budgets and teachers are being cut. Marching bands may no longer exist. Youth Education in the Arts Big Idea is to create March 4 Music, a series of benefit charity walks and rallies to raise $3 million dollars for the benefit of high school music programs. At March 4 Music events, high school music students and their supporters will mobilize at events in major stadiums to raise funds and awareness for scholastic music, with individual schools earning up to $30,000 and keeping 100% of the proceeds they raise. Students will be invited to a kick-off event to be held in August in the New York area to launch the project and create excitement for the events to be held in 2012. Years from now, March 4 Music will be a sustainable funding resource for music in the schools, providing much needed private funding and groundswell of publicity to keep music education alive and well in communities across the country."

Of all of these offerings, I find YEA's March 4 Music proposal to be the most tangible and action-oriented use of the $500,000 grant because it uses the funds to generate an additional $3 million to benefit school music programs all over the country.
