Back to the Future Overture for Clarinet, Complete with DeLorean!

I released a recording of a clarinet ensemble arrangement of Alan Silvestri's overture to the hit movie Back to the Future about a week ago. You can listen to the audio alone" target="_blank">on Soundcloud, but I now created an accompanying video for YouTube as well.

I make a point of purchasing a streaming license for all of the copyrighted material I release, and when I create videos for them, I make a point of using royalty-free images for slides and video footage that is under a Creative Commons license. Vimeo is the best online source for CC videos, and both of the videos I used to create my video are from Vimeo. Who knew there would be a complete showcase video of the DeLorean from the movie for free on Vimeo!

  • Elgar Nimrod Clarinet Quartet

In addition to the videos I have on YouTube that showcase my original compositions, I am enjoying bringing several public domain works to life as either electronic compositions or as chamber pieces that I am recording and producing myself. This is the video I created to accompany my most recent endeavor, a clarinet quartet arrangement of Sir Edward Elgar's "Nimrod" variation from the Enigma Variations. This is by far the most successful home recording project I have done to date. And while the video is primarily just a static image of the cover art, some of my other recent videos utilize royalty-free video footage.

You can pick up a copy of the sheet music for this arrangement here

I look forward to more projects like this in the days to come. Please share this video and let me know what you think!

A fun, adventurous piece for elementary band, Grade 1. Featuring the actual moment when the transporter beam is fired up! This piece introduces students to the dotted quarter-eighth rhythm, eighth note triplet, eighth-sixteenth combination for snare drum, trills for the woodwinds, and utilizes mouthpiece buzzing and scooping for the upper brass and an F3 to Bb3 glissando for the trombones. Works well with reduced instrumentation. Purchase online at Become a patron and support future compositions:

1003 Views - 0 Comments Support this composer on Patreon: This brass quartet was written to be performed with the teacher on trumpet 1 and students in their second year of study on the trumpet 2, French horn, and trombone parts, grade 1.5. The French horn part exceeds the normal playing range for a grade 1.5 piece because the student it was written for was working on producing a full octave in the key of Concert Bb. The French horn content in measures 24 and 25 could be played down the octave as needed. Score sample (pdf): (c) 2014 Thomas J. West, ASCAP. All rights reserved.

Subtitled "An Homage to Nature," Eternal Majesty opens with a fanfare heralding the glorious expanse of nature. Breaking into a shimmering and energetic melody, and complete with a lyrical section in Lydian mode, Eternal Majesty is a tour de force. Instrumentation and range are written for the middle school level, but some challenging work in Eb Major make this piece ideal for an honors band or a 7-12th grade ensemble.

  • Wondering - A Cappella Original

About a year ago, I started composing and recording my own a cappella vocal tracks. It was an exercise in using a digital audio workstation and an exercise in creativity in the same project. I have done several recordings and uploaded them to my SoundCloud page. Today, I made a simple slide-show style video for one of my original songs, which I entitled "Wondering".

"Wondering" was inspired by a ballad called "The Boy is Gone" by a professional a cappella group called The House Jacks. I had seen The House Jacks in April of 2011 and that song was on my mind when I was coming up with musical ideas to create and record.
