The Open Education Database - A Useful Tool For Starting Your Advanced Degree

image: oedb.org

For most teachers with a Bachelor's Degree in Music Education, it isn't very long into the profession before many of us are looking to go back to school to obtain a Master's Degree. The benefits to the advanced degree are mostly financial in nature, but going back to school and finding time to fit graduate work into your now-busier-than-ever adult life is challenging, to say the least.

I was recently approached by some folks behind-the-scenes at the Open Education Database to review their online directory for online schools of all kinds. I am impressed with the usability of the site. It really is a great place to research and compare many universities and colleges offering some combination of online and on-site advanced degrees.

Note: all of the screen shots I am sharing in this article can be clicked on to expand them to full size for easier viewing.

I first typed in "music" to the search engine with no other parameters. You can see that you can limit your search very easily with the various filters shown.

From the drop-down list that was produced, I selected "Music Teacher Education", which resulted in 12 schools.

If you roll over the hyperlinks for these schools, you will see that some of them link you directly to the school's website for you to explore further. Some schools, however, have a comprehensive review posted on the OEDb website that gives you a lot of hard data. I can only assume that these are schools who have paid OEDb to develop this review for them. Knowing that Boston University is one of the larger online music education schools, I clicked on their OEDb review, which you can review in its entirety here. The review has a synopsis of the school at the top and some great statistics displayed in an easy-to-understand format below.

I noticed, however, that there were some conspicuously absent online schools from the list of schools in the "Music Teacher Education" search. In doing the more broad "music" search, I found some of those schools, such as Kent State University, listed.

In summary, I find the Online Education Database search engine to be a great starting place for comparing schools for advanced degrees in Music Education or any other advanced degree. Despite the helpful tools, users will still need to do a little investigation to uncover all of the possibilities. Thank you to the folks at OEDb for inviting me to review their search engine.
